A palette for those who want to paint without fear of color

Who is this course for?

This course is for you if:

  • 🎨 You’ve always wanted to paint with color, but you feel lost when it comes to the theory

  • 🎨 Does the cake seem messy, crumbly, or hard to handle?

  • 🎨 Have you tried watercolor or oil painting and are looking for something more direct, tactile, and rewarding?

  • 🎨 Do you want a solid foundation so you can continue to grow? (This is Level 1 of 3)

  • 🎨 Are you a young person (ages 14 and up) or an adult who wants to learn from scratch using a professional method?

  • 🎨 Are you looking for a course that meets academic standards (UC A-G) but doesn’t feel like boring school?

You don’t need any prior experience. Just cakes, paper, and a desire to get your fingers covered in color.

What will you learn?

Over the course of 8 modules, you’ll master pastel painting from scratch—from your first stroke to your first piece filled with light, texture, and emotion.

What does each module include?

  • 📘 Theoretical content covering art history, various artists, and global cultural traditions (India, China, Japan, Africa, Latin America, Indigenous art, and more)

  • ✏️ Progressive hands-on exercises (3–4 per module)

What materials do you need?

Basics (to get started):

  • 🖍️ Basic set of crayons (12 colors, suitable for school)

  • 📄 Textured drawing paper (A3 or letter size)

  • 🧽 Paper or sponge blender (or your fingers)

  • 🧹 Cleaning rag or cloth

Recommended (to move forward):

  • 🖍️ Set of 24–36-color pastels (premium quality)

  • 📄 Drawing paper (Canson Mi-Teintes or similar) in neutral colors

  • 🧽 Blenders of various sizes (puff, sponge, pencil)

  • 🧴 Cake Finishing Spray

  • ✏️ Pastel pencils and white charcoal

Nothing that’s outrageously expensive. All you need to get started is a basic set and some paper.

How much time do you need?

  • 📚 Theory lessons: 30–45 minutes each

  • ✏️ Hands-on exercises: 1–2 hours per activity

  • 🎨 Final module projects: 3–5 hours each

  • ⏱️ Estimated total load: ~108.5 hours (equivalent to one school year)

Course Content

MODULE 1 – MATERIALS AND FIRST STEPS
In this module, pastel will go from being an unfamiliar medium to becoming your creative partner. You’ll explore its different characteristics (hard vs. soft), master the pressure of your hand, experiment with paper textures, and take your first steps in mixing colors. All while discovering diverse artists who made history with this medium. By the end, you’ll have created your own “materials map” and will be ready for the next level. Let’s get to work! 🖐️🎨

MODULE 2: PAPER AS A MID-TONE
The paper ceases to be merely a background and becomes the focal point: Here you’ll learn to use its color as your natural midtone. Forget about outline lines; just highlights (white pastel) and shadows (dark pastel) on colored paper. You’ll explore global traditions that use the background as an active element, from Mughal manuscripts to African textile art. You’ll create still lifes and your first chiaroscuro portrait, all while discovering masters like Leonardo, Carriera, and Zaria Forman. The paper speaks—you just have to listen! 🎨🤚

MODULE 3: OPTICAL MIXING
👁️ The eye does the mixing, not the hand: Here, the colors aren’t stirred on the palette; they’re layered on top of each other, and your retina does the rest. You’ll create your own optical color wheel (using only primary colors), explore vibrant textures, and play with complementary colors that seem to dance. From Seurat’s pointillism to Andean textiles, you’ll discover cultures that have mastered this art. In the end, you’ll paint a complete still life using just 4 pastels. A visual feast awaits your eyes! 🎨✨

MODULE 4: TEXTURE AND TOUCH
✋ A painting isn’t just something you see—it’s something you feel: Here, texture becomes your tactile language. You’ll learn 10+ texturing techniques: scratching, stippling, stenciling, scraping, impasto, sgraffito, and more. You’ll create your own “texture sample,” explore landscapes that beg to be touched, and paint portraits where skin, hair, and clothing come to life. You’ll discover how cultures around the world—from Ghana to the Andes—use texture to tell stories. In the end, you’ll have a textured portrait that invites you to explore it with your fingers. Let’s get our hands dirty! 🖐️🎨

MODULE 5: LIGHT, COLOR, AND ATMOSPHERE
☀️ Light is the soul of color: In this module, light ceases to be just a concept and becomes your primary tool. You’ll explore how color temperature (warm vs. cool) evokes emotions, how atmosphere adds depth, and how changing light transforms a landscape. You’ll create studies of light at four different times of day, experiment with warm and cool still lifes, and paint a place that holds personal meaning for you. Draw inspiration from Turner, Monet, O’Keeffe, and traditions from around the world. Bring light to your art! 🌅🎨

MODULE 6: STILL LIFE
🍎 A plate of fruit can tell the story of a whole life: In this module, everyday objects take center stage. You’ll learn to compose still lifes with balance and rhythm, master volume through chiaroscuro, apply varied textures and optical blending, and discover the hidden symbolism behind each object. From Zurbarán’s understated still lifes to Wayne Thiebaud’s pastels, you’ll explore how the still life has served as a mirror of cultures and emotions. By the end, you’ll create your own “Master Still Life” with personal meaning. Objects speak—you just have to listen to them! 🖼️🍇

MODULE 7: LANDSCAPE
🌄 The world is your canvas: In this module, you’ll venture out into the landscape to capture its light, atmosphere, and soul. You’ll learn to create depth with atmospheric perspective, master the sky in all its forms (clear, cloudy, stormy, sunset), depict water and reflections, and explore how light transforms a landscape at different times of day. From the spiritual landscapes of Chinese painting to the environmental critiques of contemporary art, you’ll discover that the landscape is much more than just a backdrop. By the end, you’ll create “My Personal Landscape”—a place that speaks to who you are. The horizon awaits you! 🏔️🎨

MODULE 8: FINAL PROJECT – MY BRIGHT PLACE
🏠 It’s time to put everything you’ve learned into practice: In this final module, you’ll create your own personal masterpiece: “My Luminous Place.” You’ll choose a place that’s meaningful to you and paint it, incorporating all the techniques from Level 1: optical mixing, texture, light, atmosphere, and composition. You’ll document your process in a journal, write your artist’s statement, and share your work during a final critique with your classmates. This is your moment to shine and celebrate your growth as an artist. Your luminous place awaits you! ✨🖼️
